Heading into the final stage of the 2017 Absa Cape Epic, both Stenerhag and Süss were clearly nervous. They had worked so hard and raced so intelligently to lead the Hansgrohe Women’s category ahead of the final stage of the race, but they were all too aware that a potentially dangerous 85 kilometres still separated them from the Grand Finale at Val de Vie Estate. They allowed the stage win chasing de Groot and Spitz, and Strauss and Last to set the pace though much of the stage; which summited the scenic Franschhoek Pass before taking riders through the Drakenstein Correctional Centre. From there, the trails became cruelly sandy, but while the teams of de Groot and Spitz and Strauss and Last distanced Stenerhag and Süss ever so slightly in the final kilometres, their overall victory was never in doubt. Crossing the line 15 seconds after the fourth dramatic sprint finish (which was won by de Groot and Spitz) of the 2017 Absa Cape Epic women’s race, Stenerhag and Süss were elated to be crowned champions of the Hansgrohe Women’s category.
The women’s race was arguably the most dramatic yet, and proved once again that with the support of events like the Absa Cape Epic, and the backing of sponsors like Hansgrohe, Meerendal Wines and Cape Brewing Co, that women’s mountain biking can thrill as a spectator sport. Though the first post-race task for Jennie Stenerhag and Esther Süss is to allow the magnitude of their victory to sink in, followed by enjoying the sensations which come with that; their attention will soon turn to the 2018 Absa Cape Epic and planning their title defence. With the display of racing they and the other elite women put on this year there is no doubt the 2018 women’s field will be stronger than ever. And as the title holders, they will not have the luxury of coming into the race as a dark horse team, but that will not throw the level headed combination off their game plan… 2018 beware, Stenerhag and Süss will be back to defend their Absa Cape Epic title!

Prologue: Meerendal CBC’s Jennie Stenerhag & Esther Süss got their 2017 Absa Cape Epic campaign off to a solid start with a second place finish on the Prologue, which took place on the trail of Meerendal Wine Estate on Sunday morning. They finished just 39 seconds behind the stage winning duo of Robyn de Groot and Sabine Spitz of Team Ascendis Health.
Cornelia Hug and Heilke Elferink, riding as Meerendal CBC 2, couldn’t match the pace of the team leaders as they struggled in the heat and dust, of the Durbanville Hills, finishing seventh on the stage. Barti Bucher and Heinz Zoerweg meanwhile got their Absa Cape Epic campaign off to the best possible start by winning the Prologue in the Grand Masters Category for Meerendal CBC 3.
Stage 1: Stage 1 of the 2017 Absa Cape Epic couldn’t have turned out better for Meerendal CBC if we’d scripted it, as Jennie Stenerhag & Esther Suss raced to stage victory in a time of 5 hours, 10 minutes and 4.2 seconds. They led from the outset today, on the 101km long stage around the trails of Hermanus, with Jennie driving the pace in as they neared the Hansgrohe queen of the mountain hotspot. She was first across the top of the climb, with Esther following close behind. Rather than sitting up and waiting for the other women’s teams to rejoin them at the front of the race the Meerendal CBC women pushed on and stretched their lead throughout the stage.
There was drama behind them when Sabine Spitz of Ascendis Health first suffered a mechanical and then crashed, leaving her with a cut above her eye which needed stitches. The Hansgrohe Cadence OMX Pro team of Annie Last & Mariske Strauss were second on the trails for much of the day, but after water point 3, Sabine & Robyn de Groot managed to catch and pass the OMX pairing; but couldn’t limit their time losses to Jennie and Esther who were flying.
The result puts Meerendal CBC in the orange women’s category leaders’ jerseys for Stage 2 from Hermanus to Greyton.
The Meerendal CBC 2 team of Hielke Elferink & Cornelia Hug had a better stage today too, finishing fifth on the stage and moving up to sixth place overall. In the Grand Masters’ category Barti Bucher and Heinz Zoerweg of Meerendal CBC 3 claimed another stage victory, further cementing their hold on the purple category leaders’ jerseys to a significant 16 minutes and 7 seconds over the ABSA Bus Boys team of Greg Anderson & Deon Kruger.
Stage 2: Stage 2 of the 2017 Absa Cape Epic had all the elements to be an even tougher stage than the day before, during which the sweltering conditions left many riders needing medical attention. The daunting 102km route was set to include 2 350m of altitude gain in a predicted 35 degrees Celsius. But after consultation with the race doctors, the route was shortened to 62km, with 1 500m of climbing.
For the elite riders, the shortened distance would mean a fast and furious pace so it would by no means be an easier day in the saddle. Leading the Hansgrohe Women’s Category Jennie Stenerhag & Esther Süss could afford to shadow the second placed pairing of Sabine Spitz & Robyn de Groot, of Ascendis Health. The shortened route had another drawback for Stenerhag & Süss, they couldn’t see the finish line as they normally would be able to. So in the final kilometre, when the race crossed under the N2 Süss knew the finish must be nearby. So she attacked on what transpired to be the final climb, distancing Spitz slightly – tough Stenerhag and de Groot followed her wheel. The gap, to Spitz though only a few bike lengths was enough to slingshot the Meerendal CBC team down the final descent and into the finishing straight with an advantage for the sprint finish. Süss crossed the finish line first – followed by de Groot, Stenerghag and then a few seconds later Spitz – handing the Meerendal CBC women their second stage win of the 2017 Absa Cape Epic and adding 6 seconds to their overall lead.
The day was less successful for the Meerendal CBC 2 team of Hielke Elferink & Cornelia Hug. Elferink had said before the stage that they had felt very strong during Stage 1, but that she had started to get goose bumps in the final hour; a sure sign of heat stroke. She then struggled to sleep on Monday night due to the heat and humidity in the race village, so the short and high paced stage did her no favours today. The Meerendal CBC 2 women finished 17 minutes and 59.6 seconds behind their stage winning teammates.
In the Grand Masters Category Barti Bucher and Heinz Zoerweg, of Meerendal CBC 3 extended their general classification lead with another superb stage victory, while in the Mixed category Heinz Posch and Nina Brenn of Meerendal CBC 4 were fifth.

Paarl – Leading South African craft beer producer Cape Brewing Company (CBC) recently walked away with four medals from the Meiningers International Craft Beer Awards. The awards were announced in Neustadt, Germany in April.
CBC was awarded top honors with a platinum medal for their Cape of Good Hope Imperial IPA, and a gold medal for their seasonal CBC Harvest Lager. The CBC Lager and CBC Krystal Weiss were both awarded silver medals.
Out of the more than 700 craft beers from 22 different nations tasted and judged for the competition, only the best 281 beers were presented with medals. The jury consisted of 76 international expert beer sommeliers, brewers, beer trade and research experts, and beer journalists.
CBC is the only South African brewery awarded with medals this year, placing the country within the top 10 of the medal log. Germany topped the log with 138 awarded beers, followed by USA (27) and Austria (11).
“The whole CBC team is very proud of the outcome at one of the most prestigious Craft Beer competition in the world,” said CBC Brewmaster Wolfgang Koedel. “It shows the ability and quality of South Africans Craft Beer standards, and our competence to compete on international standards. Congratulations to my outstanding team at CBC and to all our supporters and beer lovers out there, you are our inspiration to brew great beers. Prost!”
One of the noteworthy breweries in the competition included the Boston Beer Company, who won international Craft Beer of the year with its Samuel Adams Rebel Rouser (Imperial IPA). “It is an overwhelming result for the whole CBC team,” said Andy Kung, Head of Operations at CBC. “It is fantastic to see that hard work, dedication and consistency is being recognized on such a high caliber, international judging panel. It is great to be right up there amongst the biggest and most reputable craft breweries in the world.”
The CBC range now consists of ten beers (including three seasonal beers) after the recent launch of the CBC Pale Ale, also available in a can from Checkers, Makro and Pick n Pay liquor stores.

12 large stuffing jalapenos (from Woolworths)
12 slices of streaky bacon
250 g blue cheese, crumbled
230 g cream cheese (1 tub)
2 preserved figs, sliced
A small handful of chives, chopped
A bunch of toothpicks
I don’t think we’ve ever met a person anywhere that didn’t like a good chilli popper. Our fireside version of this classic borders on the ridiculous. It’s rich, spicy and they pair perfectly with the hoppy bite of CBC Pale Ale.
To serve: Your favourite salsa
Start by mixing your crumbled blue cheese with the cream cheese then work it with a spoon to combine. Add the chives and give it a season of freshly cracked black pepper.
Next use a small, sharp knife to slice an incision lengthwise into one side of the chilli. Be careful not to slice the chilli in two. Now use the handle of a teaspoon and wedge it into the slit then gently scrape the seeds out the chilli. If you want you can leave a few seeds in there for a spicy kick.
To stuff, gently pinch a chilli between your thumb and forefinger to open the slit then gently scoop in the cheese. You can use your finger or a teaspoon, whatever works best for you. If you want to make things really easy then use a piping bag. Be careful not to overfill the chillies. Next press in 2-3 slices of fig then pinch the chilli closed. Once you’ve got all your chillies stuffed then it’s time to wrap them in bacon. Carefully wrap each chilli in a piece of bacon then stick 2-3 toothpicks through the bacon wrapped chillies to secure.
Braai the poppers over medium heat coals until the bacon is crisp and the chillies have softened. Remove the toothpicks then serve with your favourite salsa. Smash the poppers and wash them down with a Cape Brewing Company Pale Ale.

The meat: 1 kg rump steak
½ C dark soya sauce, ½ C rice vinegar, ½ C canola oil, ¼ C brown sugar, 3 Tbsp sesame oil , 2 Tbsp honey, 1 Tbsp Chinese five spice , 1 tsp ginger, finely chopped, 1 tsp garlic, finely chopped, 1 tsp green chilli, finely chopped, 1 small handful coriander, finely chopped, 2 whole spring onions, chopped, Juice of 1 lime.
1 pack Santa Anna’s tacos (from Wellness Warehouse), 1 bag sliced red pickled onions (from Woolworths), 1 small red cabbage, sliced, A small handful of bean sprouts, 2 spring onions, chopped, 1 red or orange pepper, deseeded and sliced, 2 red chillies, sliced, 1 avo, diced, Sesame seeds.
When we’re on the road, one of our favourite campfire foods has got to be tacos. These little guys are packed with punchy Asian flavours that pair perfectly with the crisp and malty flavours of a CBC Pale Ale.
Sriracha or Tabasco sauce
Start by mixing all the ingredients for the marinade in a large plastic container until combined. Then place the meat in the marinade and give it a good coating. Place a lid on the container and leave it in the fridge to marinate for a few hours – overnight is even better.
Remove the meat container from the fridge and allow it to come to room temperature. Remove the steak from the marinade then pour the marinade into a small sauce pot and set aside. Braai the steak over very hot coals for about 2-3 minutes a side for rare, or cook to your liking. Remove the steak from the fire and let it rest for at least 5 minutes. While the steak is resting, heat your marinade to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes.
Cut the steak into thin strips then lightly season it with salt and pepper. Heat a few tacos in a frying pan to warm. Now you’re ready to build your tacos. Build a layer of veggies in any order that works for you then add the steak. Drizzle some warm marinade over the steak then top with avo, and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Dive in, smash it, and then wash it all down with a Cape Brewing Company Pale Ale.
