CBC Brewmaster’s Reserve – Dunkel

We at Cape Brewing Company (CBC) are again pioneering within the South African craft beer landscape with the launch of a speciality craft beer range that embodies the changing face of the market.

The new Brewmaster’s Reserve range first hit our taps at the brewery in August 2017, and has since seen two additional releases. First on the launch line-up was the Dunkel (Dark Lager), followed by a very special West Coast IPA, which was released only a few months later in April 2018. Short on the heels of the IPA, the latest addition to this already fantastic range is another Dunkel – though it might not be new, the demand was popular and undeniable.

This limited-edition beers was inspired by the true essence of originality and has been created to impress. Wolfgang Koedel, founding Brewmaster at CBC, encourages his brewers to be visionaries. This range was developed and produced by the skilled Head Brewers Anton Trollip, Dewald Goosen and with the passionate help from their Brewers Siegfried Kisting, Shawn Adams and Chris Spirdens. The Brewmaster’s Reserve will set a precedent for the future Brewmasters of CBC, and it is entirely different to our usual range of beers as it is a Limited Edition, created with individually selected imported ingredients.

Keep an eye out for our next Brewmaster’s Reserve brew launching first week in August.

Tradition with a Twist

Have you tried our latest addition to our Brewmaster’s Reserve Range: The Mandarina Weiss?

On top of every beer fan’s bucket list should be to check our new summer-inspired Mandarina Weiss.

The CBC Mandarina Weiss is released under CBC’s Brewmaster’s Reserve and is a much-loved flavoursome beer that draws deep respect from die-hard CBC fans.

The unfiltered 340ml bottled craft beer has all the flavours one would expect from a traditional Hefeweizen (a classic wheat beer). The Mandarina Weiss is slightly less intense in taste compared to the Amber Weiss or the Red Weiss, two other favoured CBC craft beers crafted by CBC master brewer, Wolfgang Koedel, at the state of the art CBC brewery.

Craft brewers and hops geeks would be interested to know that the Mandarina Bavaria Hop originated in Hüll Germany, and was released to the global craft beer community in 2012. The name, “Mandarina,” is derived from the beer’s fruity and citrusy Mandarin Orange flavour. This hop is the daughter of the most widely used Cascade hop grown in Germany. The unique hop cone is appreciated for both its citrus flavour and aroma and imparts its citrusy sweet notes especially when used for dry hopping.

The Mandarina Weiss is available at select liquor stores in the Western Cape and Gauteng areas, with a recommended retail price of R34.99 per bottle.

You Won’t Be Growling At This, Promise

For craft beer fans, beer is a great gift idea any time of the year. Whether you are shopping for a homebrewing housemate or a craft beer loving spouse, CBC’s Growler Kit is the perfect gift idea and will brings a sense of wonderment to even the most discerning craft beer connoisseur.

The CBC Growler Kit is the first of it’s kind from South Africa’s leading independent craft beer producer, Cape Brewing Company (CBC). The Growler Kit includes 440ml bottles of CBC’s Lager, Pilsner, Krystal Weiss and Amber Weiss as well as a 2 litre growler – a sealable and reusable glass container which makes it convenient for beer lovers to refill with their favourite CBC draught beers.

The use of growlers dates back to the late 1800s in the United States, when metal pails were used to transport beer from the local tavern to an individual’s home. Some say the term originated from the sound that the pail’s cover made from the escaping carbon dioxide. Other, more creative anecdotes, state that either the bartender or the customer would be responsible for the growling – in those years, the barkeep was only supposed to fill the container with one pint of beer, while customers always edged for a larger refill. Whichever party was left dissatisfied after a transaction, was responsible for the ‘growling.’

More recently, the use of growlers has become popular again in the global craft beer industry.

“We love the origin story of the growler, and by introducing it locally, it gives an opportunity for CBC fans to own what is becoming somewhat of a mainstay in the global craft beer industry,” says Wolfgang Koedel, CBC’s Brewmaster.

Andy Kung, CBC’s COO, adds: “Consumers can use the growler to refill with their favourite draught beer at our Tasting Room and take a taste of the brewery home with them.

“The way the bottle has been designed ensures that you can transport your craft beer from one place to another without a degradation of quality. Of course, once re-filled, the growler should be refrigerated as soon as possible and should be consumed within two to three days to maintain that fresh on-tap taste.”

The CBC Growler Kit is available exclusively from the CBC Tasting Room and online shop. Growler refills are R75 per 2 litre refill at the CBC Tasting Room.
